Set in the heart of Sebenza, Sugar’s Bakery, Restaurant & Catering opened its doors in April 2019 to bring the community the delectable delight of artisanal, handmade baked goods, meals and delicacies. Identifying a need in the industrial area for a ‘good food’ eatery, Sugar’s provides the perfect feeding ground for surrounding workplaces and residences. Whether you’re looking for a ‘grab ‘n go’ bite, a sit-down meal or event platters, Sugar’s offers the finest food options for every taste.
The family-run business is founded on a rich Mediterranean heritage of heart-filled, hand-made baking and cooking. The kitchen and bakery are led by culinary artist, ‘Mama Maria’. She has spent nearly two decades passionately cooking up masterpieces, supplying some of the city’s top restaurants and events with her delectable creations. This culinary passion has been passed through the generations, with her son, Bazil, managing the bakery and restaurant, after a vast background of restaurant and catering experience.
Inspired by the industrial surroundings, Sugar’s has a shabby chic aesthetic that fuses rustic charm with a slick, modern twist. With double-volume ceilings, exposed brick walls, copper-pipe lighting and hanging pot plants, Sugar’s provides the perfect setting for any mealtime moment. Glass windows invite diners to peek into the processes of our kitchen and bakery in action.
The deli-style bakery, reminiscent of European-style stores, provides the perfect lunchtime ‘grab ‘n go’, with shelves of freshly-baked bread and other hand-made bakery goods on offer. Each and every baked good is proudly made from scratch in our bakery, with their very own starter dough.
Open Monday to Saturday, the ‘spacious yet cosy’ restaurant provides the perfect work-day escape or meeting place for a wholesome breakfast, lunch or a quick coffee. The menu offers a fusion of hand-created Mediterranean-inspired meals, light classics and South African favourites, with all baked ingredients sourced directly from the bakery.
The signature souvla braai is served Wednesday through Saturday, offering delicious, Mediterranean-style braaied lamb, chicken and pork. Passionate pizza-lovers can build their own masterpiece atop freshly-made starter dough and Mama’s home-made napolitana sauce, which is baked in a traditional wood-fire pizza oven.
